Nestled within this world of rock, ravines, and volcanoes is the shinning white city of Arequipa, Peru’s second largest. It is an elegant and ornate example of colonial architectural achievement, built of opalescent volcanic stone from nearby El Misti. Close at hand are soda lakes, which are the periodic nesting site of rose-colored flocks of flamingos, overlooked by the majestic volcanic cones of El Misti and Pichu Pichu.
