The most famous is the volcano El Misti (5822m), which has a beautiful conical peak topped by snow. It rises majestically behind Arequipa’s cathedral and is clearly visible from the Plaza de Armas. Many of the city’s buildings date to colonial times, and many are built from a very light-colored volcanic rock called sillar. The buildings dazzle in the sun, earning Arequipa the nickname “the white city”.
