Trujillo Hotels : Hotel Libertador Summit Comments: Lonely Planet Trujillo “The coastal city of Trujillo, with about 650,000 inhabitants, is Peru’s third largest city. Founded in 1535 by Pizarro, it is an attractive colonial city and retains much of its colonial flavor. Nearby is the ancient Chimu capital of Chan Chan, and in the area are several other Chimu sites and the immense Moche pyramids of the Temples of the Sun and Moon (Huacas del Sol y de la Luna), which date back about 1500 years. If so much ancient culture wears you out, you can relax at the beach village of Huanchaco.” Footprint Trujillo “Trujillo, capital of the Department of La Libertad, disputes the title of second city of Peru with Arequipa. Founded by Diego de Almagro in 1534 as an express assignment ordered by Francisco Pizarro, the city was named after latter’s native town in Spain. There is enough here to hold the attention for several days. The area abounds in pre-Columbian sites, there are beaches and good surfing within easy reach and the city itself still has many old churches and graceful colonial homes, built during the reigns of the viceroys.” |
